RICE
Rice is the staple food in Sri Lanka and is the main crop cultivated in the country. Nearly two million farmer families engage in Rice cultivation, accounting for 34% of total cultivated agriculture land, and producing approximately 2.7 million tons of non-Basmati raw Rice each year.
PULSES
Pulses are a subgroup of legumes that are a nutrient powerhouse. Rich in proteins and soluble fibres while being low in fat, their consumption is recommended by the Ministry of Health for the prevention and management of non communicable diseases such as diabetes, coronary heart disease and hypertension, as well as obesity.
WHEAT GRAIN
Wheat grain is one of the oldest and most important cereal crops in the world. In Sri Lanka it is imported and processed domestically into flour which is used for the purpose of making food items such as bread, biscuits, crackers, pastries, buns, cakes, pizzas and pastas.
SUGAR
Sugar is an essential commodity and is the primary commodity which Durden Commodities trades in. Domestic production of Sugar in Sri Lanka is vastly insufficient to meet total national consumption and the country imports over approximately 90% of its Sugar requirements.
CEMENT
The accelerated focus on construction since the end of the civil war in 2009 has resulted in the construction sector becoming an important cog in the nation’s economy.
COAL
Coal is one of the main energy contributors to the national grid of Sri Lanka, used by thermal power plants. It is also used in the domestic production of steel and cement, but to a lesser extent.
